HPV

HPV is a term that refers to a group of viruses that are known as human papilloma viruses. There are actually over one-hundred different strains of viruses that fall under this term. Approximately thirty of these viruses can be transmitted sexually.

Unlike some of the other STDs, HPV has virtually no symptoms. There may be an unusual Pap smear result in women who have HPV but normally those infected have no idea. Fortunately HPV can clear up on its own.

This STD is actually more common than many people realize. Some facts regarding HPV include:

* HPV can be found in approximately 20 million people.

* Half of all people who are sexually active will be infected with HPV at some point in their adult life.

* Over 6 million people become infected with HPV each year.

* By the time a woman reaches the age of 50, she has an 80% chance of having had HPV at some point.

There has been increased interest lately in the area of HPV as it relates to Pap tests in women. If a woman does have an abnormal HPV test, there is a very large chance, 90% in fact that within two years that result will once again be normal. This is attributed to the fact that HPV generally clears by itself.

If a woman returns for her Pap smear with the same abnormal result this can be a warning sign of cervical cancer. HPV can cause changes in the cervix which can lead to the development of pre-cancerous and cancerous cells.

Many medical professionals are now viewing the test for HPV as an early warning sign of cancer. If a woman does find that she has a positive HPV result, her doctor will discuss the options for treatment if he or she feels that is warranted. A high-risk HPV infection does need to be tended to.

Not to be overlooked, HPV does strike men as well. All individuals who are sexually active need to be aware of the possibility of HPV when they are engaging in any sexual activity.
